liam's home birth - so beautiful

There is nothing like life given and life embraced and there is nothing like the privilege of seeing new life come into this world and join a family.

I've been blessed to see my grandchildren join our family. I've been blessed to see my niece join our family and in October of this year, I was blessed to see Liam Ledner join our family.

Please take a moment to bask in the life God gives as you watch Liam's home birth. BreAnna's midwife, Sue, and her doula, Alison (also a midwife), were an awesome team.

doulas - extra help for moms

The documentary The Business of Giving Birth presents the case for women helping women.

Blogger mom of A Much Better blog affirms this in her post on the role a doula can play: absolutely wonderful addition to the modern, medical birthing environment. They are proven to reduce a number of unnecessary interventions, including cesarean. They offer emotional support and in my instances, doulas will gently remind a woman who is being coerced into unnecessary procedures about her original intentions. . .

I witnessed firsthand the beauty of the relationship between a laboring mother and her doula with the home birth of my darling sister-in-law, BreAnna.

My friend Alisa (an experienced doula having given birth to eight herself) became my younger daughter's doula for the birth of her third little one.

I'd love your thoughts on home births, having a doula and midwives.

babies, babies and nod's free shipping

I'm thinking about babies this morning and one thing I noticed in San Sebastian, Spain was that most - I mean just about ALL women paraded along with these sorts of baby carriers. Of course, I'm just dreaming about this one...but, NOD has lots of other deals going on and free shipping is super cool. If you missed my journey through Basque Country - go here to begin! Was a fantastic trip and I can't wait to have the opportunity to return.

giving birth

Interpretation: Welcome to our family - new baby, Christiana.
Yesterday, daughter Candace told the grandkiddos that in December, we're going to have a new family member in our family. Jillian, almost seven, took the window paint and proceeded to write a welcome sign to "our families new baby." She also has given the baby a name. Guess she's hoping for a little girl. Sweet.

Candace, very early in the part of her first trimester has been hit with some pretty intense morning sickness. I so remember those mornings. Ahh....

Fortunately, I get to be on the nurturing team (Mark's the other player). Right now, she crashed out on my blue sofa, trying to get comfortable, periodiacally sip some ginger tea and watch the "Having Babies" TLC on the Discovery Channel. In and out of working on morning Simple Home chores, teaching Jillian how to wash dishes, and Zane how to pull weeds, I can't help watch too, and cry a bit.

What is it about the gift of life that makes a woman tear up with someone she doesn't even know? I guess it's just being a mom and experiencing the joy of life. Gosh, I can hardly wait for December to get here!

Survivor

I subscribe to Tony Perkin's Washington Update. This e-newsletter just came into my box. It's amazing and needs to be read. I'll quote:

Survivor: The Womb Edition
Having just witnessed the miracle of new life, I was amazed at the story of the Lord's protection over an unborn baby that doctors in the U.K. tried--unsuccessfully--to abort. The child, who physicians claimed suffered from an enlarged heart that would likely be fatal in the womb, was a twin. Heeding their doctors' advice, which was to put the child out of his misery, Rebecca and Mark Jones reluctantly agreed to abort the baby in hopes of saving his brother. Gabriel, as he is now known, had other ideas. When the medical team tried to sever his umbilical cord to cut off the blood supply, the cord was too strong. Next they tried to divide the placenta in half "so that when Gabriel died, it wouldn't affect his twin brother."

To everyone's amazement, Gabriel survived for another five weeks--long enough for Rebecca to deliver him. She and her husband now marvel that their babies are both alive and completely healthy. "No one could quite believe it," Rebecca says, seven months later. In fact, the procedure that doctors thought would end Gabriel's life was later credited with saving it.

The distribution of nutrients through the separate placentas helped give him the strength he needed to keep fighting. As moving as this story is, it does underscore just how vital it is for families to have pro-life doctors who share their worldview. Like the Joneses, we're often at the mercy of the medical community's opinion, and surely we all want their advice to be illuminated through a pro-life lens.
