Need Help - Want "Green" Cleaner for Hard Wood Floors

Michael and I did this great remodel a year ago and I've used the standard toxic cleaner on our new hard wood floors. I've been getting organized in the kitchen, with my linens and different closets. Because my philosophy is The Simple Home (new wordpress blog coming) I've also been creating sanctuary and going green and I'd HEART some advice on going green with cleaning the hard wood floors.

Thanks for sharing what works for you!

I don't know if there is a difference between caring for softwood and hardwood, but we used a vinegar water spray on our pine flooring and it worked just fine :)

I don't have hardwood, I have Pergo (and Pergo-knock-offs)
I know nearly everything I use makes them streak.
Until I started using BioKleen Bac-Out. It's super concentrated, so I put a few cups of water in my sink, squirt in a bit, and use a rag to wipe the floor.
Not a single streak. They look great. It smells good. And it's Green!
(Btw, I'm a floor cleaning snob--no mop works for me. I MUST get down on hands and knees and wipe)

I just bought a steamshark. It is just plain water and dries almost instantly. It has been fantastic for our hardwood, pergo and whatever the nasty stuff in the kitchen is. Leaves it clean, dry and shiny. I love that it takes no chemicals, no /bucket the pads are washable, it's also so light. I got mine at Target.
Great blog-thanks!

I would definitely second the idea for purchasing a hardwood floor steamer. I have a Bissell that I ordered from Amazon and it is the best investment I have ever made. The pads are washable and reusable and my home feels so much cleaner since I started using this in our home. You could even add a few drops of essential oil to the pad to release a fresh scent in your house while you are steaming.

Oh my--I am in exactly the same boat, Lylah. I like the idea of the steam cleaning thing, but does it kill the germies? Would love to know what brand floor steamer Amy and Kirsti have as well...thanks!

When I was growing up my mom cleaned our hardwoods with white vinegar and water. I have seen the infomercial on the steam shark and would LOVE to own one. Hope that helps.

I have all hard wood floors in my home and I found this great green cleaner by Shaklee called Basic-H2. I have used it 2 ways. I have a 16oz spray bottle that I put 1/4 teaspoon of the Basic H2 and fill the rest with water and use it to spray spots on the floor then wet mop it up, or I put 1 teaspoon of Basic H2 in a gallon of water in my mop bucket and use it that way. I absolutely LOVE how it works!!! You can get the Basic H2 at www.shaklee.net/rmasten. Under household cleaners. Hope this helps!!! (If you want to kill germs at 1/4 of teaspoon of Basic G to your spray bottle and 1 teaspoon to your mop water!)
